Bone Grafting

Dental implants are meant to last a lifetime, but when the jawbone in the area is not strong enough, the implant cannot be successfully implanted. Here at Garrison Family Dentistry in Smithville, MO, we are able to solve this problem with bone grafting.

Bone grafting is often needed because the ridge where the implant is placed is too small. This can happen when a tooth is not replaced quickly enough. In other cases, patients are just born with smaller ridges. In either case, we can perform a bone graft to build up the area.

Bone grafting is the process of taking bone from another area of the mouth or body and placed in the area where the jawbone needs to be repaired. Some cases may use bone material from a bone bank; a very safe source. After the area is opened up and packed with the bone graft material, the area is allowed to heal for a few months. During these months, the newly placed bone will heal and it will cause further regeneration of new bone. The end result will be a strong jawbone able to hold an implant for a lifetime. After the healing process is complete, the dental implant can be installed.
